A New Govenor—A New Year
Response of CSEA President Danny
Donohue. To Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s proposed
2007-2008 New York State Budget.
"Governor Eliot Spitzer has delivered an
ambitious and challenging agenda in his
budget proposal.  This is much to admire in
his objective and energy.

We are very pleased that Governor Spitzer
has recognized the importance of
strengthening state operations.  Quality
services depend on having a state work
force to deliver them.  For too long there has
been an erosion of both resources and
morale in state government.  The governor’s
budget delivers a hopeful message about
his commitment to state service.

Our initial review of the governor’s
proposals shows a recognition of the
importance of helping cash-strapped local
governments shore up their finances and
meet the needs of their communities.  As
the representative of local government
workers in every corner of the state, CSEA
applauds Governor Spitzer’s fair and
responsible commitment.

CSEA will continue to study the governor’s
proposals on the state’s health care
system, especially their impact on public
health care.  There is a lot to consider in
what the governor has put forth and the
issues are far too important in the short and
long term for a knee-jerk response.  CSEA
is committed to a public health care system
that meets the needs of real people in the
communities where they live.  We will not
back away from that commitment and will
work to ensure that principle is reflected in
the budget.”
